One of the most exciting young artists in contemporary jazz, pianist, band leader and composer Joey Alexander joins the Wellington Jazz Festival line-up. At just 23, the three-time GRAMMY nominee is renowned for his lyrical improvisation, melodic depth, and a sound that connects modern jazz with the spirit and rhythm of his Indonesian roots.
Alexander will perform tracks from his latest album, Celestial Keeper, alongside highlights from his back catalogue, joined by bassist Alon Near and drummer Tyson Jackson.
Alexander has been performing professionally since 2013 when Wynton Marsalis invited him to perform at the Jazz at Lincoln Center Gala. His career has since soared, sharing the stage with jazz greats such as Wayne Shorter and esperanza spalding, and appearing on major stages including Carnegie Hall, the Apollo Theater and jazz festivals around the world.
