Free Status is a jazz fusion band blending the soulful grooves of 70s funk legends and Herbie Hancock with the electronic edge of artists like Moby. Their sound is rich, inventive, and full of energy.
At the centre is Tommy David (keys), a rising composer and performer recognised in national jazz competitions and for sharing stages with acts such as Dire Straits Legacy Band, Nazareth, and Hello Sailor. He’s joined by powerhouse rhythm players Behzad Karakia (drums) and Tyler Diprose (bass), both veterans alongside many of Aotearoa’s jazz greats.
On lead alto sax, James Dawes brings versatility and flair, recently earning a place in an international touring band. Longtime collaborator Sam Voyle (keys/tenor sax) adds depth and synergy, with performance credits including the America’s Cup main stage.
Together, Free Status delivers a vibrant mix of groove, improvisation, and genre-bending originality.
