Zoe Moon (Mahal) returns to Wellington Jazz Festival with Real Black for Me, a powerful tribute to the soul icon Roberta Flack, an artist whose voice could fill a room or break a heart with a whisper.

Born in Hawai‘i and raised in Aotearoa, Moon has forged a sound all her own, blending jazz, soul, blues, gospel and acoustic storytelling. Renowned for her world-class musicianship and magnetic stage presence, she reimagines Flack’s extraordinary catalogue alongside her stellar band and a live string section. Created with Wellington composer and bandleader Seth Boy, the fresh arrangements breathe new life into beloved classics and hidden gems.

Moon’s Silver Scroll-nominated single “THE LETTER” and charting release “In Person” have established her as one of Aotearoa’s most compelling emerging artists. She has performed on world-renowned stages including the North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival and the Hollywood Bowl.
