The Royal New Zealand Air Force Jazz Orchestra performs the compositions and arrangements of Mary Lou Williams, the First Lady of Swing.

Performing with the biggest names of the day including Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong, it was her prolific work as a composer and arranger that made her mark. She wrote arrangements and compositions for Earl Hines, Andy Kirk, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and Count Basie, among others. Her ability to stay relevant and anticipate music trends from boogie-woogie through to swing and into the bebop era meant she left an indelible mark on jazz.
