With three critically acclaimed recordings The Troubles, Kapow! and Twenty Twelve, The Troubles are one of the most exciting and unexpected developments in New Zealand jazz in recent times.
They are led by John Rae, a celebrated drummer and composer originally hailing from Edinburgh, Scotland. During a long residency in New Zealand’s capital city of Wellington, The Troubles developed and honed their brand of meticulously composed music. From the coarse to the sublime, the emotive to the absurd, their music is inventive, passionate, honest and wholly life-affirming.
Incorporating a string quartet, horns and rhythm section, The Troubles and their distinct sound have wowed audiences around the world with highlights including critically acclaimed, sold-out performances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festivals plus national tours around Australasia.
