Playing compelling original jazz.
Petrichor (/ˈpɛtrɪkɔːr/) is the earthy scent produced when rain falls on dry soil. The Petrichor Ensemble is an exciting, modern, living example of improvised music.
It makes for a vibrant, unapologetic, and compelling listen. Comprising a selection of New Zealand's top jazz musicians, the Petrichor Ensemble offers a night of world-class original compositions and wildly engaging improvisation.
Featuring the musical direction of one of New Zealand's foremost percussive exponents Greg Crayford on Drum Kit, Jake Baxendale (who needs no introduction to our Jazz Festival community) on tenor saxophone, Miles Crayford on piano, Michael Costello on trumpet, and Mike Duffy on upright bass.
Mike Duffy has written the material for the Petrichor Ensemble and this performance will be its public debut in front of a live audience. Drawing from the youthful energy and excitement of modern Jazz composers like Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah, the harmonic and rhythmic sophistication of folkloric vocal music from Bulgaria and the grandiose musical architecture of post rock, the compositions are a truly postmodern experience. You won’t need an arts degree to appreciate this music though.
