With opening act NZSM Festival Combo
Award-winning big band featuring one of Wellington’s leading saxophonists.
The award-winning NZSM Big Band One will present a programme of new material with soloist saxophonist Oscar Lavën. Led by musical director Rodger Fox, Big Band One features the country’s best up-and-coming jazz talent from among NZSM jazz majors. The band has appeared in concert with international artists including Mike Nock, Alex Sipiagin, Dick Oates, Eric Marienthal, and Chris Cain, and in 2010 was awarded the Tui Award for Best Jazz Recording for the album Run for Cover.
Oscar Lavën is an eclectic saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist based in Wellington. A frequently appearing personality in the New Zealand improvised music scene, Lavën is a busy full-time performer with a dynamic energy, and an avid composer. He has performed and recorded nationally and internationally with many artists/ensembles including the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, John Beasley’s MONK’estra, Dave Weckl, Steve Gadd, James Carter, The Rodger Fox Big Band, Robben Ford, Lydia Pence, Bret McKenzie, The Wellington Mingus Ensemble, his own 19-piece big band The Neo Hot Jive Orchestra, The Wellington City Shake ‘Em On Downers, and many more.
The NZSM Festival Combo will open the concert, featuring select students from the NZSM Jazz Performance Programme in a small group setting.
