Guitar-led organ quintet playing original bebop.

After recently returning from London, jazz guitarist Alex 'Honey' Boulton has been busy on the Wellington scene, taking part in an array of different musical contexts, as well as recently releasing his debut album Portrait.

On this occasion, Alex will be bringing his new quintet to Meow. A quintet that embodies the intensity and fire of a bebop group, all the while conveying the steady beat of those soul jazz outfits we’ve grown to love. Joining Alex on the bandstand is stalwart rhythm section Christopher Yeabsley on organ and Cory Champion on drums (with whom he recorded his debut album ‘Portrait’) plus the stirring horn section of Louisa Williamson on tenor saxophone and James Guilford on trumpet.

The band will perform an array of freshly arranged material, a selection of Alex’s compositions inspired by the likes of Charlie Parker, Tadd Dameron, Lennie Tristano etc. and special selections from the bebop archives of Bud Powell and Toshiko Akiyoshi.
