Explorations into the fascinating world of double bass extended techniques.
Sydney-based kiwi double bassist Tom Botting presents a set of solo music created as a result of his recently completed doctoral research, along with a talk about double bass extended techniques and the realities associated with using them in practice.
Tom graduated with a PhD from the University of Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2019 with a thesis entitled “Developing a Personal Vocabulary for Solo Double Bass Through Assimilation of Extended Techniques and Preparations”. His research resulted in a body of work consisting of études, longer form works and improvisations for solo double bass which are the main focus of this performance.
Since relocating from Auckland to Sydney in late 2011, Tom has quickly forged a path into the Australian jazz scene. His impressive abilities as a sideman and bassist have led to playing opportunities with jazz luminaries as diverse as Roger Manins, James Muller, and Walter Smith III. Tom also leads his quintet Wild South, inspired by people and places in New Zealand, and placed third in the 2015 National Jazz Awards at Wangaratta Jazz Festival.
