In the 1930s and 40s, hundreds of women musicians toured in 'glamorous' All-Girl Bands, while others played side by side with their male counterparts. Yet by the mid-50s female jazz musicians had disappeared from the workplace; their names, their contributions to music, completely forgotten.

The Girls in the Band tells the poignant, untold stories of female jazz and big band instrumentalists and their fascinating, ground-breaking journeys from the late 30s to the present day.

The film will be followed by a discussion about gender disparity in the present-day music industry of Aotearoa and what we can do to help bring about change.
