City Gallery Wellington's late-night happenings get a live jazz twist
City Gallery’s popular late-night openings feature art, music, beer, food and more. In this special jazz-flavoured edition, hear Nigel Patterson (The Black Seeds, Fly My Pretties) perform on Michael Parekōwhai’s extraordinary carved piano sculpture, and take a tour of the exhibition This Is New Zealand. Then refuel at the bar and enjoy more hot jazz from New Zealand’s finest, Bella Kalolo - performing with full band.
Hailing from Christchurch, Bella Kalolo is a Samoan, Tongan and Māori (Ngāti Porou) soul sister who has been handpicked to work with and support artists as diverse as Mos Def, Ciara, Renee Geyer, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Dave Dobbyn, Hollie Smith, New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, and soul legend Chaka Khan. Her reputation as one of New Zealand’s most entertaining performers has earned her spots at Glastonbury, City of London Festival, Sydney Festival, Java Jazz Festival in Jakarta, and closer to home; Tauranga Jazz Fest, Waiheke Jazz Fest, Parachute Festival and the huge Waitangi Day celebrations at Flatbush, Manukau.
Tuatara Open Late is part of City Gallery Wellington’s regular programme of after-dark art and fun, the first Thursday of every month.
