Secondary school jazz combos from around the country battle it out
The New Zealand School of Music Jazz Project gives secondary school students and band directors from around the country the chance to work with international jazz musicians in a day of workshops, competitions and clinics, all open to the public.
Guest adjudicators for the combo competition include five-time Grammy Award nominee Robben Ford; Musical Director of one of the United States’ finest college jazz bands, Matt Harris; Director of Jazz Studies at Vanderbilt University, Ryan Middagh; and New Zealand School of Music Senior Lecturer and jazz pianist Mark Donlon.
The jazz combo competition is open to small jazz ensembles and runs throughout the day. Each combo has a 20-minute performance followed by an on-stage workshop led by a guest judge.
