The fresh sax sounds of avant-garde chamber jazz

With two critically acclaimed albums under her belt, Jasmine Lovell-Smith returns to Wellington with her “intriguing intersection of avant-garde art music and chamber jazz” (New Zealand Musician).

She spent seven years living in the United States and Mexico, playing with her quintet Towering Poppies, studying under the experimentalist composer and saxophonist Anthony Braxton and teaching jazz studies and the saxophone at the Universidad Michoacana in Mexico. And now she’s back, as a doctoral candidate in composition at the New Zealand School of Music, honing her skills with composer John Psathas.
